In a statement issued by the forum’s chairman, A.M. Al-Amin Daggash, the NEF urged the government to suspend the proposed reforms and initiate broader consultations with stakeholders. The forum argued that the reforms, as currently outlined, could be unfair and detrimental to the nation’s economic well-being.
Daggash emphasized the need for an inclusive approach to policy-making, calling for a redesign of the implementation strategy that addresses the concerns of various groups. “The government must adopt a careful and inclusive approach to ensure the reforms are beneficial for all,” he stated.
The forum also criticized the proposed VAT revenue-sharing formula, which it described as unjust to states that generate the majority of VAT revenue. Daggash argued that VAT distribution should be based on consumption rather than arbitrary allocations, to ensure that states contributing the most to VAT collection receive a fair share of the revenue.
Daggash further accused the Tinubu administration of disregarding opposing views and resorting to coercive tactics to advance its policies. He stated, “The government has displayed a troubling disregard for patriotic voices and has shown an inclination to suppress opposition.”
While the NEF expressed support for tax reforms that align with global best practices, it emphasized that the proposed bills lack the necessary transparency and inclusivity to ensure effective policy outcomes.
