The General Synod of the Church of England narrowly passed the approval of same-sex marriage, with votes in the House of Laity at 95 for and 91 against, and in the House of Clergy at 99 for and 88 against. While this decision was celebrated by LGBTQ+ advocates, it has provoked strong backlash from conservative Anglicans.
Archbishop Henry Ndukuba, Primate of the Church of Nigeria, released a statement titled “Church of Nigeria Response to the Approval of the Living in Love and Faith Liturgy by the Church of England,” warning that this decision could lead to a fractured sacramental communion between the two churches. He stated, “If the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Church of England proceed with the Approval of the Living in Love and Faith Liturgy and permit their clergy to conduct same-sex marriages, the Church of England risks severing sacramental communion with the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) and other orthodox Anglican provinces.”
“This decision signifies a pivotal moment for the Anglican Communion, potentially compromising its future. We commend those bishops, clergy, and laity who have upheld Scripture as the Church’s doctrinal, liturgical, and ethical guide. Their steadfastness underscores the enduring authority of Scripture.”
Ndukuba emphasized continued cooperation with like-minded organizations such as GAFCON, GSFA, CEEC, and the Alliance to support these Anglicans. He reiterated the Church of Nigeria’s commitment to biblical teachings, even amidst challenges, quoting John 8:32: “In this stance, we affirm our dedication to preserving the biblical doctrines that have historically guided the Church.”
