A federal high court in Lagos has sentenced Adrienne Munju, a Canadian national, to 11 years in prison for drug trafficking. She was arrested by NDLEA operatives on October 3 at terminal 1 of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja Lagos, during the inward clearance of passengers on a KLM flight.
Narcotic agents discovered 74 parcels of Canadian loud, a potent strain of synthetic cannabis, weighing 35.20 kilograms in her possession.
Munju claimed she was recruited online to smuggle the drugs for a promised sum of 10,000 Canadian dollars upon delivery in Lagos.
The 41-year-old said she accepted the offer to raise money for her ongoing master’s degree in Canada.
At the court hearing, the Canadian pleaded guilty to the charges.
Following her plea, NDLEA prosecutor Abu Ibrahim called witness Angela Mba, an assistant superintendent of narcotics, who testified about Munju’s arrest. Exhibits including two suitcases used for concealing the drugs, her Canadian passport, confessional statements, laboratory test reports, and drug samples were submitted and admitted into evidence.
Presiding judge Deinde Dipeolu convicted Munju based on the presented facts and exhibits.
During sentencing, Benson Ndakara, Munju’s counsel, pleaded for leniency, stating, “We plead for leniency on behalf of the convict, my lord. The convict pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity by not wasting the precious time of the court and has been very remorseful.” Judge Dipeolu then sentenced her to six years in prison on the first count and five years on the second, with an option to pay N50 million per count, amounting to a total of N100 million.. ..ALSO READ FULL FROM SOURCE ↔️
