Baking can sometimes be an arduous and time-consuming task, but there are also ways budding bakes can whip up a chocolate cake in a matter of minutes.

BBC Good Food shared a delicious recipe for melt-in-the-middle mug cake, the perfect speedy treat for a Sunday evening.

The recipe takes a total of four minutes to make from start to finish, including three minutes of prep and just one minute of cooking.

With BBC Good Food giving it a difficulty rating of “easy”, it’s the perfect recipe to get young children involved with making.

The gooey cake is made entirely in the microwave – budding bakers won’t have to switch their oven on once.

BBC Good Food said: “This chocolate cake is made entirely in a mug. It requires no weighing, takes 45 seconds to cook and has a melty chocolate centre, perfect for a quick treat.”

This recipe makes just one chocolatey mug cake so is the ultimate stay at home treat for one. If you’re hosting, simply whip up a bunch of individual cakes.

Ingredients (for one mug cake)

Two tbsp sunflower oil

One medium egg

Two tbsp plain flour

Three tbsp light brown sugar

One tbsp cocoa powder

Dash of vanilla extract

One tbsp boiling water

One soft chocolate truffle of your choice (we used Lindt Lindor)

Ice cream or cream, to serve (optional)

1. Place all the ingredients – except for the chocolate truffle – into a large mug (BBC Good Food used 350ml). Use a fork to whisk all the ingredients together with a pinch of salt.

2. Push the chocolate into the centre of the batter. Microwave the cake on high for 45 seconds until it’s cooked on the outside with a liquid molten centre. Enjoy as is is or serve hot with ice cream or cream.
