The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has launched a fleet of 30 electric vehicles for passenger transport at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. The new service will charge passengers N10,000 per trip from the airport to the city centre. The fleet includes 10 shuttle buses and 20 saloon cars.

FAAN’s Governing Board Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, stated the initiative aims to reduce carbon emissions and support global sustainability targets, including the International Civil Aviation Organization’s net-zero goal by 2050. FAAN Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, added that approval has been secured to deploy 100 electric vehicles across Lagos and Abuja airports.

Key Points:

The introduction provides a new, environmentally focused transport option but at a premium cost that may limit accessibility for many travellers.
It represents a significant capital investment in green infrastructure for Nigerian aviation, aligning with international environmental standards.
Passengers gain a cleaner, quieter transport alternative, while FAAN advances its sustainability agenda and operational modernization.
The launch marks a tangible step towards decarbonizing airport operations, setting a precedent for other public transport sectors in Nigeria.
Announced alongside plans for a larger rollout, the timing positions FAAN as a leader in adopting electric mobility within West Africa’s aviation industry.

Conclusion
While promoting environmental sustainability, the success of the service will depend on passenger uptake of its premium fare structure and the reliability of the new electric fleet.
