The image of Tinubu on the alleged currency first appeared on Facebook, with some users claiming the CBN had introduced the new note in his honor.

One Facebook post read: “The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has unveiled the first sample of the ₦5000 note, which will soon be distributed to banks. The note features a portrait of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. According to the CBN Governor, this decision honors Tinubu for his commendable contributions during his presidency.”

However, Africa Check, an international fact-checking organization, debunked the claim. It reported that the viral post, shared on January 26, 2024, was generated using AI software, Grok. The fact-checking body also revealed that those who posted the image attempted to crop out the “Grok” watermark.

Artificial intelligence employs complex algorithms to perform tasks such as answering questions and generating images, making it easy to create misleading content.

Recall that in 2012, the CBN announced plans to introduce a ₦5000 note, but the proposal was later abandoned. In 2022, the bank again dismissed suggestions of issuing such a denomination, despite recurring calls for its introduction.
