Okorie, a member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), was invited by the Navy for a meeting on September 10, 2024, at their Iwofe Aker Base in Port Harcourt but has not been seen since that day.
According to his wife, Barrister Okorie contacted her on September 11 to inform her that he would be returning home with some Naval officials.
However, he failed to return as expected, and his phone remained unreachable for the rest of the day. The following day, his wife visited the Navy office in search of answers but was directed to report him missing to the police, which she refused, insisting that her husband was in their custody.
Later, Barrister Okorie managed to contact his wife using a naval officer’s phone, confirming that he was being held in Navy custody. Despite her bringing food to him and speaking to him briefly, she was not allowed to see him, and his whereabouts within the facility remained unclear.
As the situation continued, Okorie’s community in Ebonyi State wrote to the NBA, urging them to intervene. Two weeks later, human rights advocates and NBA members visited the naval base but were denied information about his whereabouts. When his wife returned, the Navy claimed there was no record of his detention and instructed her to come back on Monday. She protested, demanding answers, stating that if her husband had committed any crime, he should be charged.
A Navy officer named Mr. Eko eventually told the wife that Barrister Okorie had been transferred to Abuja, but no details about the charges or reasons for his detention were provided. Since then, there has been no word on his condition or location, leaving the family in the dark for over three months.
The wife, who suffers from partial blindness, has been struggling to manage her health while desperately seeking information. Their children have been left in anguish, asking for their father’s return. The family is calling on the Nigerian Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Ebonyi State Government, and the Nigerian Bar Association to investigate the case and help reunite Barrister Kevin Okorie with his family.
