The horrific assault occurred on Monday, January 1, 2025, when gunmen opened fire on a gathering preparing for a burial ceremony scheduled for January 2. Five security operatives and two civilians were killed in the attack.
The assailants, after storming the ceremony, fired indiscriminately before fleeing the scene. In their attempt to escape, they targeted additional security personnel near the local government headquarters, further escalating the violence and leaving more casualties in their wake.
The State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the tragic incident, noting that the Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, has launched a manhunt to apprehend the gunmen. The authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the perpetrators face justice.
Governor Soludo addressed the gathering at the burial of Bridget Akanma Onuchukwu in Ihiala, where he condemned the attack and called for unity among community leaders and residents. He urged the people of Ihiala to take a stand against the criminal elements wreaking havoc in the area.
“Communities must rise now and come together,” Soludo urged. “Those responsible are among us in Ihiala. If you are a President General (PG), leader, or group leader, it is your duty to gather information about what is happening in your community. We must unite; we must not allow this violence to continue.”
In an effort to encourage cooperation from the public, Governor Soludo offered a ₦10 million bounty for information that leads to the arrest of the criminals responsible for the attack.
