The organisers of the Grammy Awards clearly justify singer Tyla’s win of the Best African Music Performance in the 2026 edition of the prestigious show.

Tyla won the award, her second plaque in two years, by beating the likes of Burna Boy, Davido, and Ayra Star.

However, some Africans expressed their displeasure after the announcement. According to them, Tyla’s music doesn’t sound African at all, but more like pop. Tyla herself had often noted that her brand of music is A-Pop.

A look at the Grammys website shows that her brand of music is listed among those eligible for the Best African Music Performance.

Grammy said, “Best African Music Performance: A track and singles Category that recognises recordings that utilise unique local expressions from across the African continent. Highlighting regional melodic, harmonic and rhythmic musical traditions, the Category includes but is not limited to the Afrobeat, Afro-fusion, Afro Pop, Afrobeats, Alte, Amapiano, Bongo Flava, Genge, Kizomba, Chimurenga, High Life, Fuji, Kwassa, Ndombolo, Mapouka, Ghanaian Drill, Afro-House, South African Hip-Hop, and Ethio Jazz genres.”
