According to Lilongwe Police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu, the suspect, who joined the hospital in 2024, reportedly sold the machine to a clinician operating a private clinic in the city. The transaction was allegedly made for K2 million, with an initial payment of K1.8 million.
Following his arrest, Mataka cooperated with the authorities and led them to the clinician who purchased the stolen equipment. Police are currently investigating the clinician’s involvement.
The theft has raised concerns about security lapses in public healthcare facilities and the illicit sale of essential medical equipment. Authorities have assured the public that measures will be put in place to prevent such incidents in the future.
