“I made it very clear that the Alaafin’s stool would not be for sale. It is not a stool for us to toil with,” the governor said. “I never spoke to Oba Owoade or any of the princes vying for the stool until yesterday. This was deliberate, as I did not want my opinion to influence the process.”
The governor also recounted how he had previously handled traditional appointments in the state, emphasizing his commitment to fairness and neutrality. He noted that political affiliations did not influence his decisions, referencing his approval of the selection of the Okere of Saki in a previous instance.
Controversy Surrounding the Appointment
Oba Owoade’s appointment on January 10, 2025, sparked controversy among some members of the Oyomesi, the traditional council of kingmakers. They argued that the appointment violated the Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy Declaration of 1967, which mandates that the Oyomesi conduct the selection through established traditional procedures.
Despite the objections, Governor Makinde reiterated his administration’s commitment to unity and progress, ensuring that the Alaafin’s appointment was handled with transparency.
