The Portuguese tactician stepped down from his role as head coach of the three-time African champions in February.

Despite guiding the team to the finals of the AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, the 64-year-old couldn’t reach a new agreement with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Reflecting on his time as head coach of the Super Eagles, the former Sporting Lisbon manager disclosed that he decided to leave the role even before the African Cup of Nations.

“There was too much stress,” Peseiro stated. “I had the support of my staff and the best from my players, but it wasn’t enough. I wanted to win the AFCON for the fans, the government, for everyone, but even before the tournament, I had already decided to leave. Even if I had won the trophy, I would have still left.”

Peseiro won 11 out of 22 matches for the Super Eagles, according to Sofascore.

His departure ushered in Finidi George as the new head coach; however, the former international resigned after just two matches in charge.

The NFF is still on the hunt for the next coach to succeed Finidi George following their botched agreement with German tactician Bruno Labbadia.
