On Tuesday, June 11, 2024, SaharaReporters obtained a petition from the human rights organisation Amnesty International which states that the IRT was indicted after gold worth more than N700 million went missing from the IGP’s residence.

It was revealed that the IRT arrested several individuals who are currently being held in detention. Their names include Alh. Aminu Sarkin Zabarmawan Kebbi and his two shop attendants, Alh. Musa Aliyu, Alh. Nuhu Usman, Anas Aminu, Yahaya (a tailor from Rigasa), and several Point of Sale (PoS) operators.

“Gold worth more than N700 million was stolen from the residence of the Inspector General of Police in the first week of May 2024, allegedly belonging to the Principal Staff Officer 3 to the Inspector General of Police.”

The petition stated that the stolen gold found its way to the Wuse market and was purchased by a man named Alhaji Auwal, who is currently at large.

The petition further read, “The Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Abuja, arrested several members of the Gold Dealers Association at the Wuse Market and PoS operators who had transacted business with Alhaji Auwal, the prime suspect.”

“A preliminary investigation revealed that the police IRT unit was working directly under the instructions of the IGP, who had subjected all those arrested to untold and inhumane hardships, including beatings, hanging, and forcefully collecting money from them under the guise of recovering the stolen gold.”

“One of the fundamental rights violations involved Alh. Amin Sarkin Zabarmawan Kebbi, whose shop attendants at his shop in Wuse Market bought gold worth N3 million. He was handcuffed, and his shop with gold worth over N100 million was taken by the IRT, and he is still being held under detention along with his attendants.”

“Another gold attendant at a shop in Wuse Market, Nuhu Usman, who also transacted business with Alhaji Auwal for a significant amount, was arrested, molested, traumatized, and forced to pay N11 million for gold he bought for six million naira at 125,000 per gram of 80-gram gold on the instructions of PSO 3 (Buky).”

“The IRT also obtained a bank statement from Taj Bank for Nuhu Usman and forcefully withdrew N13 million in cash.”

“Additionally, a tailor and resident of Rigasa, Kaduna, who knows Alh. Auwal, the principal suspect, was arrested and beaten to a coma at the IRT office in Abuja and is still under detention.”

The petition also questioned the ownership of the stolen gold.

“The question is, who owned the stolen gold? The IGP? His wife? Or PSO 3 (Buky)? The IRT team investigating the stolen gold from the IGP’s residence were listed as Mashood, Femi, Joe (piyapiya), Femi, Habila, and Abdul,” the petition added…ĊONTINUE.THE FULL R£ĄÐING.>’.
