In his telegram on Monday, Pope Francis expressed his hope that under Trump’s leadership, the U.S. would strive for a more just society, free from hatred and exclusion.
He prayed for the well-being of the American people and encouraged policies that respect human dignity.
“It is my hope that under your leadership the American people will prosper and always strive to build a more just society, where there is no room for hatred, discrimination or exclusion,” he wrote in the telegram.
When asked about the deportation plans during the show, Francis stated, “If true, this will be a disgrace, because it makes the poor wretches who have nothing pay the bill for the problem. This won’t do! This is not the way to solve things. That’s not how things are resolved.”
Mass deportation was a key issue during Trump’s campaign, along with plans to construct a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
In 2016, Francis famously commented on this proposal, stating that anyone who builds walls to exclude migrants is acting in a way that is “not Christian.”
Several U.S. Catholic leaders have also condemned Trump’s immigration policies.
Cardinal Robert McElroy, the incoming archbishop of Washington, D.C., described mass deportations as contrary to Catholic teachings, citing the Biblical call to “welcome the stranger.”
Similarly, Chicago Cardinal Blasé Cupich criticized the plans as deeply troubling, while also acknowledging the need for governments to secure their borders responsibly.
Cupich, speaking from the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, stressed the importance of balancing border protection with defending the rights and dignity of all people.
As the first Latin American pope, Francis, who comes from an immigrant family in Argentina, has consistently advocated for the rights of migrants.
