The video sparked public outrage, with some criticizing the man for being unable to control his wife or manage his household, while others called for the woman’s arrest and prosecution for destroying a passport, which is considered government property. The NIS Public Relations Officer, DCI Kenneth Udo, stated that the individuals involved had been identified and summoned for further investigation. He noted that if the allegations were proven true, the woman’s actions would constitute a violation of Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended), with penalties outlined under Section 10(h) of the same Act.

“The Nigeria Immigration Service remains committed to upholding the provisions of the Immigration Act in the interest of national security and to preserving the dignity and integrity of the nation’s legal instruments,” Udo said.

However, in a recent video posted on the family’s Instagram page, the man clarified the situation. Accompanied by his children, he urged Nigerians to forgive him and to understand the context. He explained that what his wife tore was not his passport, emphasizing that as a Nigerian, he would never violate the country’s laws.

“What my wife tore is not a passport; she never tore my passport. We were doing a skit, sharing someone else’s story, and I didn’t expect it to go viral. Please, I beg everyone, my passport is intact. This issue shouldn’t be dragged into the mud,” he said.

He continued, “We are sorry. We would never defy Nigerian law; we are proud Nigerians and would never destroy a Nigerian passport.”
