Okonkwo, in a statement posted on his X account on Thursday, expressed disappointment over the government’s decision to incarcerate Silekunola and others involved in the charity event. He argued that the former Queen’s intentions were purely philanthropic and that holding her accountable for the unfortunate deaths and injuries was unjust.
Okonkwo’s Defense of Ex-Queen Naomi
The actor-politician emphasized that Silekunola’s actions were motivated by a genuine desire to assist those in need and not by negligence or malice. He pointed out that the stampede was a result of hunger and hardship faced by many Nigerians, not the fault of the organizers.
“The detention of former Queen Naomi and others over the Ibadan stampede is deeply disheartening,” Okonkwo wrote. “For showing love and attempting to help, the government, which has failed its citizens, is now punishing her. There is no evidence to suggest she was careless, reckless, or negligent in the distribution of the relief items.”
He further argued that the large turnout of people—far exceeding the expected numbers—was a reflection of the dire economic conditions in the country.
“It couldn’t have been her fault that she anticipated 500 attendees but was overwhelmed by 5,000 desperate individuals,” he added.
Impact on Philanthropy
Okonkwo warned that detaining benefactors like Silekunola could discourage other well-meaning Nigerians from engaging in charitable acts.
“By this ungodly act of punishing benefactors, the government is unwittingly discouraging kindhearted philanthropists from helping the less privileged,” he stated.
The former Labour Party chieftain acknowledged the tragedy of the stampede, offering prayers for the departed souls. However, he expressed frustration that the Queen and other organizers were spending the Christmas holidays in detention for attempting to alleviate suffering.
“The Ibadan stampede was a very unfortunate event. May the souls of the departed rest in peace. But keeping the Queen and others behind bars nearly ruined my own Christmas celebrations,” he said.
Call for Immediate Release
Okonkwo urged the government to release Silekunola and the other detainees, emphasizing that hunger and hardship, not mismanagement, were the root causes of the tragedy. He also called for the implementation of better strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“The government should release the Queen and other benefactors immediately. They should offer advice on how to manage such distributions better rather than punishing those who are trying to help,” he stated.
