Udengs Eradiri, the Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in the 2023 Bayelsa State election, has shared candid insights into the difficulties he faced during his campaign, criticizing the deep-rooted corruption and transactional nature of Nigerian politics.
In a revealing interview with Arise News on Monday, Eradiri expressed his frustrations with both his party and the broader political system, highlighting the systemic challenges that continue to hinder meaningful leadership and development in the country.
Reflecting on the obstacles he encountered, Eradiri lamented that Nigerians, including members of his own party, were not truly ready for the kind of change he envisioned. Rather, he argued, there is a widespread preference for a transactional approach to politics—one where material incentives often overshadow the need for genuine leadership. “They showed me pepper, both from the people and also from within the party,” he said. “You hear that Nigerians are suffering, but once you bring money, Nigerians would forget that suffering. I was fooled.”
Eradiri explained that despite his determination to bring change, many of the people he sought to serve were more focused on immediate, tangible benefits than on long-term societal transformation. “I thought Bayelsans and Nigerians were ready for change, and I did everything possible. On the part of his party, Eradiri criticized what he described as a “transactional” mindset, where individuals come together primarily to extract personal benefits rather than to work for the collective good. He noted, “People just put themselves together and see what they can get from the system, either from the ruling party or from those who have deep pockets.”
In addition to these challenges, Eradiri also took aim at the electoral process, alleging that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) plays a role in perpetuating electoral manipulation. He claimed that the system unfairly disadvantages candidates without substantial financial backing. “The Lagos system and the judiciary of INEC killed the moral system, and that’s what affected people like us in the electoral system who did not have the deep pockets to throw money around,” Eradiri explained.
He went further to detail how the electoral system itself is fraught with issues, describing how party codes issued by INEC are often manipulated. “The code that INEC gives to your party, they would sell it to the opponent,” he said. “Before you know it, the opposing party has uploaded agents on your behalf. By the time you try to fix it, it would not work. Those are the transactions made.”
Despite the setbacks, Eradiri acknowledged that his struggles were not unique to the LP, nor were they exclusive to his governorship bid. He observed that similar challenges pervade all political parties in Nigeria, though some may be better equipped to navigate the system. “These shenanigans are in every party,” he said. “But you get to a certain area where you can manage them. Human beings are the ones who can navigate through all those parties, probably because there is a structure that, no matter what, you would be able to find.”
Reflecting on his personal journey, Eradiri noted the emotional and financial toll the campaign had taken on him.
