But who the world champions target to rebuild their squad is a story to watch for going forward. But what is becoming apparent is who Manchester City’s dream signing is as they seek to regenerate their squad. That player looks to be Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz.
James Ducker, Jason Burt and Mike McGrath have compiled an extensive report for the Telegraph that looks into the prospect of Manchester City’s rebuild. A host of players are listed as potential transfer targets for the world champions. One name stands out above the rest. That is German international Florian Wirtz. In terms of what Manchester City need and how they’ll rebuild Pep Guardiola’s squad, Wirtz looks to be Manchester City’s dream signing.
As Manchester City embark on their rebuild next summer they will need to find a player who can either one day replace Kevin De Bruyne or take some of the creative burden off the Manchester City legend. Pep Guardiola’s team is almost over-reliant on De Bruyne’s brilliance. They are in desperate need of a player who can help in that regard. If you were to pick one player to solve that issue it would be Florian Wirtz.
The German international has again starred for Bayer Leverkusen this season. In 23 appearances in all competitions, he has scored 10 goals and added 5 assists. Wirtz has continued on from his impressive 23/24 campaign. He starred in Xabi Alonso’s side last season as they completed a Bundesliga/DFB Pokal double. He is also a key member of the German national team.
There isn’t a like-for-like replacement out there for Kevin De Bruyne. But in terms of adding more creativity and flair to City’s play, Wirtz would certainly add these traits. Florian Wirtz appears to be Manchester City’s dream signing. But for Manchester City to sign him they’ll have a battle on their hands.
As per the Telegraph’s report, there is a host of teams interested in signing Wirtz. A report from Mark Brus for CaughtOffside indicates that Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and Liverpool all have their eye on signing the Bayer Leverkusen star. If they view Wirtz as a dream signing Manchester City will have to pull out all the stops to win the race for his signature.
Perhaps convincing Wirtz that he can be the face of City’s midfield under Pep Guardiola could be Manchester City’s trump card.
