has always been towards the top of INEOS’ list to become the next United boss if Ten Hag was to leave.

However, if the Reds wanted to appoint him this summer, they would hit the snag that he won’t be available until at least July. The European Championships are just around the corner and England are expected to reach at least the knockout stages which will begin at the end of June at the earliest.

This is far from ideal if United want to hit the ground running in the summer transfer market.

Southgate has split opinion as England boss despite guiding the national side to the final of the last European Championships. England hadn’t reached the final of a major tournament since lifting the World Cup on home soil in 1966.
