The Russian-built Antonov aircraft went down on Tuesday evening after taking off from the military’s Wadi Seidna air base. Both military officers and civilians were among the casualties.
The cause of the crash remains unclear, though military sources suggested a possible technical malfunction, BBC reports.
The tragedy occurred just a day after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) claimed to have downed a fighter jet in South Darfur amid the ongoing war with the Sudanese army.
The conflict, which began in April 2023, has devastated Sudan, leading to the killing of thousands and displacement of around 12 million people.
Emergency teams transported injured civilians, including children, to a nearby hospital following the crash, the health ministry said.
Unnamed military sources quoted by Reuters confirmed that a senior army commander in Khartoum was among those killed.
Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion as the aircraft went down, damaging several homes, according to AFP. The crash also caused power outages in nearby areas.
