He pointed out that these entities made false promises to vulnerable immigrants, offering easy pathways to citizenship or jobs that were never fulfilled. Trudeau emphasized that while Canada’s immigration system was designed to attract skilled workers and international students, it had been abused by those seeking to profit from it.
This report by Trudeau has caused a stir on social media because Canada is a leading destination for Nigerians seeking a better life away from the continent.
A 2022 report by CIC News indicates that Nigeria was Canada’s fourth top immigration source country, welcoming 22,085 Nigerian immigrants, making up 5.05% of Canada’s total number of permanent residents.
The report noted that there are over 100,000 Canadians of Nigerian descent who call Canada home.
In July 2024, Canadian Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship (IRCC), a Canadian government department that handles immigration, refugee matters, and citizenship, confirmed that over 71,459 Nigerians became Canadian citizens between 2005 and 2024.
According to IRCC data, India has been the top country of origin for new Canadian citizens since 2005, with 536,279 people gaining citizenship.
