The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has directed a total ban on the production and sale of alcoholic beverages in sachets and small bottles below 200ml, effective December 2025.
The agency’s Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, stated that decisive action is necessary to curb a “public health menace” linked to widespread misuse by minors, rising domestic violence, and road accidents.
Key Points:
NAFDAC has ordered a full ban on alcohol in sachets and bottles below 200ml by December 2025.
The directive follows a resolution from the Senate, which cited easy access by minors.
Professor Mojisola Adeyeye described the products as a major factor in addiction and social vices.
The ban is termed “protective, not punitive,” aimed at safeguarding youth and public health.
This follows a phased MoU with manufacturers, with previous deadlines in 2023 and 2024 extended.
NAFDAC will collaborate with security agencies for full enforcement starting January 2026.
The agency affirmed that no further extensions beyond the December 2025 deadline will be granted.
This ban represents a critical, if controversial, intervention in the complex storm between economic interests, regulatory authority, and the urgent need to protect public health and social order.
