The director general of the authority, Dr. Kelechi Ohiri, who stated this during a media parley in Abuja noted that the NHIA has reviewed the minimum basic benefit package and family planning package are also included.
He added that the agency also increased coverage from a baseline of 16.7 million to about 19.2 million and achieving a 14% increase in less than a year.
Ohiri added that the fistula program has 21 centers and about 22 hospitals in total are dealing with the program.
“Over 1000 women with fistula have been treated and this treatment have been paid for by the agency to the hospitals directly and verified by the third party administration.
“The agency has increased capitation by 60% and the fee service by 40% across board in order to bring it closer to reality,” he stated.
Ohiri noted that NHIA is setting up a fund for catastrophic illness like cancer that is potentially affecting the people.
“We will ensure more awareness are created and more educational tips are given towards people to know what they need and expand the coverage on the retirement group,” he said.
He added that, “We will address illness like cancer and other catastrophic health illness through the specialised interventions to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.”
Responding, the NHIA director of Enforcement, Adebayo Abdulhamid, said a total of 2,591 complaints from headquarters and state offices were received by the authority, out of which 1,678 were complaints made against healthcare facilities and 913 were made against HMOs.
