The Nigerian Army has confirmed the death of a soldier who was attacked and killed by a mentally unstable man while on internal security duty in the Imota area of Ikorodu, Lagos State.

Previously, SaharaReporters exclusively reported that tragedy occurred on Monday at a military checkpoint in Lagos State, after the mentally unstable man killed one of the soldiers stationed at the facility.
SaharaReporters learnt that the man snatched a rifle from the soldier and killed him.
The incident happened in Agbowa community, along Ikorodu expressway in Lagos State on Monday.
“An insane man snatched a military man’s rifle and shot him dead at a check point. It happened at Adeogun bridge in Agbowa,” a police source had told SaharaReporters.
According to a statement issued by the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 81 Division, Lieutenant Colonel Musa Yahaya, the soldier was struck on the head with a heavy log while attempting to calm a chaotic situation.
The attacker, described as mentally unstable, overpowered the soldier before delivering the fatal blow.
“The situation was swiftly brought under control by other soldiers at the scene, who neutralized the attacker and recovered the soldiers’ weapon. The injured soldier was evacuated to Ikorodu General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. He was subsequently buried according to Islamic rite with the Acting Commanding Officer and other officers of the unit in attendance.
“The 81 Division has since launched a full-scale investigation into the incident to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the attack and determine whether there were any lapses in protocol or response.”
In its statement, the Army extended condolences to the soldier’s family, friends, and loved ones, describing him as having served the nation with honour.
It also urged Nigerians to avoid circulating unverified information about the incident.
“We urge the public to exercise caution and report any suspicious activities to the relevant security agencies. We also appeal for responsible reporting on this incident, allowing our investigation to run its course,” Yahaya added.
