“I want to make this announcement just like we did last year, that this year, we will pay the 13th-month salary,” the Governor declared.
The Governor reiterated his administration’s dedication to ensuring the well-being of workers, emphasizing their critical role as partners in Abia’s development.
He directed a comprehensive review of the state’s salary structure, particularly regarding discrepancies in the implementation of the National Minimum Wage adjustments introduced in October.
“I have instructed my team to revisit the salary structure and address the issues identified. In the coming days, we will engage with the leadership of Organized Labour to finalize necessary adjustments,” he assured.
Responding to reports listing Abia among states yet to implement the new National Minimum Wage, Governor Otti dismissed the claims as “lack of information.”
He emphasized that Abia was one of the pioneer states to commence the implementation.
Speaking on contentious issue of pension arrears, which his administration inherited. Despite criticisms from some pensioners, he highlighted his efforts to address the backlog of payments dating back to 2014.
Recounting an earlier meeting with the National Union of Pensioners (NUP), he explained, “The leadership made it clear that consistent monthly payments were more important than arrears, but I felt it was unjust not to address the backlog.”
“The first time I met with the NUP leadership, they were clear to me to say that what was important to them was to be able to plan, so if the government would commit to paying them 100 percent of their pension from that month, we should forget about the arrears, and I felt it was not fair,” Governor Otti clarified.
The Governor described the state’s workforce as instrumental to his electoral success and expressed gratitude for their support and collaboration in rebuilding Abia State.
He noted that the meeting served as an opportunity to engage directly with workers and convey his appreciation for their role in transforming the state.
In his remarks, the Abia State NLC Chairman, Comrade Ogbonnaya Okoro commended the Governor Otti’s proactive approach to addressing salary structure concerns and his unwavering commitment to workers’ welfare.

The meeting, attended by senior government officials including the Deputy Governor of the State, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu; Chief of Staff (CoS) to Governor Otti, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, PhD; Hon.
