In a statement released on Friday, five kingmakers declared the appointment null and void, emphasizing that Prince Lukman Gbadegesin remains the legitimate candidate they had recommended for the revered throne.

Kingmakers Reference Established Selection Process

The kingmakers referred to a meeting held on September 30, 2022, where they conducted the selection process in line with the Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy Declaration of 1961. According to their account, Prince Lukman Adelodun Gbadegesin was selected as the Alaafin by a majority vote.

Following the selection, Prince Gbadegesin’s name was formally submitted to Governor Makinde for approval. However, the governor failed to act on their recommendation, leaving the process in limbo.

“The Kingmakers thereafter filed an action to prevent His Excellency from disrupting the selection process, which has now resulted in an ongoing appeal at the Court of Appeal,” the statement read.

Opposition to Government’s Consultation and Divination Claims

The kingmakers expressed dismay over claims that the government’s decision was based on broad consultations and divination.

“We must emphatically state that the Alaafin is not chosen by consultation or divination but strictly in compliance with the Registered Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy Declaration of 1967, which codifies the native law and custom governing the selection process for the vacant stool of the Alaafin,” they stated.

The group criticized a meeting allegedly convened by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, asserting it bypassed the traditional selection process.

“Any meeting of a few kingmakers and emergency warrant chiefs, held at the Governor’s office or elsewhere at the instance of the Commissioner, to select the Governor’s preferred candidate as Alaafin, is contrary to the native law, custom, and Chieftaincy Declaration. It is unlawful, illegal, invalid, null, and void,” the kingmakers declared.

The kingmakers accused Governor Makinde of overstepping his constitutional authority, arguing that it is not the governor’s role to convene or dictate the selection of the Alaafin.

“This rushed appointment disregards established procedures and undermines the sacred institution of the Alaafin,” they said, reiterating their commitment to upholding the traditional processes outlined in the 1967 Chieftaincy Declaration.

They called for the reinstatement of Prince Lukman Gbadegesin as the rightful Alaafin, urging the government to respect the traditional selection process and avoid further interference in the matter.TOP SECRET REVEALED FINALLY!
