Nigerian athletes have won a total of 27 athletes with the 1996 edition being the country’s best-ever outing at the games where Nigeria won six medals, including two gold, one silver and three bronze medals.
With the 2024 Paris Olympics currently underway, we put the spotlight on some Nigerian athletes who are likely to clinch a gold medal for the country.
Tobi Amusan
The 27-year-old is Nigeria’s best shot at clinching a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. Amusan will be competing in the women’s 100m hurdles event.
Amusan is the current world record holder in the 100 metres hurdles with a time of 12.12 seconds which she set at the 2022 women’s 100 metres hurdles semifinal in Eugene Oregon.
She is the current Commonwealth and African champion in the 100 m hurdles, as well as the meet record holder in those two competitions.
Ese Brume
She is the current commonwealth champion and a three-time African senior champion in the long Jump and holds a personal best of 7.17 m
She currently holds the commonwealth games record, African junior record and African record in the event.
She’s a two-time medalist at the world athletics championship, an Olympic bronze medalist and also a five-time African junior champion in athletics.
Aruna Quadri
The 35-year-old has been clear on his ambitions ahead of the Paris Olympics after finishing in the quarter-final exit at Rio 2016.
Aruna will be competing in his fourth Olympics having featured in the 2012, 2016, and 2020 editions.
