Obi shared this information in a post on the X platform, where he commended Governor Ademola Adeleke for intervening and preventing the execution. He described the court’s verdict as an “inhumane punishment,” noting that it highlighted the severe flaws in Nigeria’s legal system.
The 2023 LP presidential candidate went on to lament the stark contrast between the treatment of ordinary citizens and those who engage in high-level corruption. He argued that while individuals who embezzle public funds are often celebrated, those who speak out or commit minor offenses like theft are punished harshly.
Obi condemned a system that he believes rewards impunity and punishes integrity, calling for urgent judicial reforms in Nigeria. He wrote:
“I would like to commend Governor Ademola Adeleke for stepping in to prevent the inhumane punishment of death by hanging for the theft of a fowl and eggs—an offense for which the individual had already spent 14 years in prison. That sentence alone far exceeded the demands of justice, if the crime warranted such consideration in the first place.
“This case underscores the harsh inequalities of the Nigerian legal system. If you dare to speak freely, you are treated as a criminal and silenced. If you embezzle billions of public funds, you are celebrated, even when caught and taken to court. Yet, those pursuing honest, legitimate businesses are burdened by oppressive regulations and treated with suspicion, as though success through integrity is a crime.

Background of the Case
The case that prompted Obi’s remarks centers on Segun Olowookere, an indigene of Osun State, who was sentenced to death by hanging for stealing a fowl. In a tearful interview with Nollywood actress Biola Adebayo on her YouTube podcast, Segun’s mother, Folashade Olowookere, shared the emotional toll of her son’s conviction, detailing the hardships faced by her only child, who had already spent 14 years in prison for the same crime before being condemned to death.
Governor Adeleke’s intervention was critical in preventing the execution. He ordered a review of Segun’s case and took action to grant him prerogative mercy, thereby halting the death sentence. This move was widely praised as a necessary step to address the disproportionate and harsh punishment handed down in such cases.
