Armed with weapons and chanting war songs, the hoodlums positioned themselves around the secretariat, creating a tense and hostile environment.

Obaseki, who arrived at the secretariat to resume his duties, was forced to retreat and address the press outside the premises. In his statement, he expressed deep concern over the situation, saying, “I came here to continue my work as the elected chairman of Oredo Local Government. I met a whole lot of thugs who have already overtaken the council. This is a very disturbing trend. We are calling on the security agencies to arrest the situation. What is important is that we have a restraining order.”

The incident follows a significant legal development in the state. On Friday, the Edo State High Court ruled that the suspension of Obaseki and 17 other council chairmen by the Edo State House of Assembly was unlawful. The suspensions had been prompted by a petition from Governor Monday Okpebholo, who accused the chairmen and their deputies of insubordination and gross misconduct.

The ruling by the court has reaffirmed the legality of the chairmen’s positions, effectively nullifying the suspension order. Obaseki, in his remarks, emphasized the importance of the court’s restraining order in the ongoing situation, calling on the relevant authorities to enforce the ruling and ensure his safety and ability to govern.

In a related development, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has weighed in on the matter, stating that the Edo State House of Assembly lacks the constitutional authority to suspend elected chairmen and vice-chairmen of local governments in the state. This opinion further supports the legal standing of the affected chairmen, including Obaseki, in their ongoing dispute with the state assembly.BREAKING NEWS|TAP TO VIEW THE FULL V!DEO, FATHER ARRESTED FOR BEHE4DING HIS 1 YEAH OLD SON AND CAUSING INJURY TO HIS WIFE AND MOTHER IN-LAW.
