People diagnosed with diabetes need to be extremely vigilant of their regular sugar intake. A healthy diet approach is necessary For diabetics to be mindful of their blood sugar levels and overall health. An ideal healthy diet includes vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds, dry fruits, juices, smoothies etc. Diabetic patients are always stuck between whether they should eat raw fruits or drink juices.

In a conversation with Jagran English, Dr Vidya Tickoo, Consultant Endocrinologist & Diabetologist, Yashoda Hospitals Hyderabad explained whether diabetics should eat raw fruits or drink juice.

According to Dr Tickoo, undoubtedly, eating raw fruit is much more beneficial than drinking juice, even if it is made from the same fruit. The main reason for this is the fibre content of the fruit. When we make juice out of fruit, the fibre content in the peel and skin of the fruit is left behind. Fibre, as we all know, is very good for preventing constipation, but it has many other benefits.

The fibre in the fruit binds to the sugar inside the digestive system and decreases the absorption of the sugar, so there is a slower absorption of the sugar from the intestine leading to a slow and lower peak of the rise of blood sugar levels. Hence, it serves as a great snack for diabetics if taken in limited portions.

Fibre in the diet also helps in reducing cholesterol and the risk of cardiac disease. It causes fullness and satiety and ultimately leads to some modest amount of weight loss over time. On the other hand, juice gets rapidly absorbed from the intestine, causing a peak in the blood sugar levels, hence diabetics should avoid juices even without added sugar in them.

Also, after the increase in the blood sugar, insulin gets released and that can lead to low blood sugar levels and also trigger hunger, leading to weight gain eventually. Hence, eating raw fruit has many benefits and is an excellent snack for diabetics, whereas juice can lead to fluctuations in blood sugar and should be avoided.
