Omoyele Sowore has discussed how the ever-changing nature of digital publishing has impacted the revenue generated by Sahara Reporters, a news agency he founded. The activist was responding to a question about the management and funding of the online platform that he established in 2006.

He mentioned that the platform had been operating independently without advertisements for over a decade until he recently allowed public advertorials.

“When it comes to media, one of the challenges that media owners face is revenue. By protecting the revenue aspect, you can remain independent if that is your goal. There are many platforms that are created for various reasons,” Sowore explained.

He continued, “Initially, Sahara did not rely on any advertisements from government or media agencies because those ads often came with strings attached.”

Regarding how they sustained the platform, he said he said: “Where we didn’t have like big staff, because we knew we could not afford to pay them at the beginning. And then later on, of course, to protect the brand, we were seeking support from foundations who had no interest in Nigeria to support the work. And so that was how Sahara grew and became unbiased. And we protected that. But it’s a constant struggle.
