Speaking on the BBC Hausa program Gane Mini Hanya, Lamido, a prominent member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), criticized the President’s approach to governance, particularly regarding recent loan requests. He argued that the government’s public statements are inconsistent with its actions.
Citing last year’s budget, Lamido questioned the logic behind borrowing despite an apparent surplus. He said, “If Nigerians are being told the truth, then there is nothing wrong with that. But how do you budget ₦30 trillion, generate ₦50 trillion, and still request a loan when you have a surplus of ₦20 trillion? This is sheer recklessness and selfishness that is unheard of globally, yet some Nigerians support it.”
He expressed disappointment with the level of support for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), despite widespread criticism of its policies. “Just visit social media; you’ll see how APC is being criticized and even referred to as a calamity, yet some people defend it,” he added.
Lamido also took aim at former President Muhammadu Buhari, accusing him of lacking transparency during his tenure. He claimed both Buhari and Tinubu’s administrations relied heavily on propaganda rather than being upfront with Nigerians about the challenges facing the nation.
In contrast, Lamido praised the PDP’s era of governance, asserting that it prioritized openness and honesty with the public. He called on Nigerians to critically examine the actions of their leaders rather than accepting propaganda as the truth.
