Eguavoen, who is the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Director, was charged with leading the Super Eagles in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Benin Republic and Rwanda following the NFF’s botched agreement with German tactician Bruno Labbadia.
This is the fourth stint for the 59-year-old , who has been in charge of the team from 2005 to 2007, in 2010, and in 2022.
He led the Super Eagles to a third-place finish in the 2006 AFCON and crashed out of the 2021 AFCON in the round of 16 despite winning all three of his group stage matches.
Eguavoen also missed out on the FIFA World Cup ticket in March 2022 to Ghana in the double-header qualifiers before his recent appointment, where he beat Benin Republic 3-0 and recorded a goalless draw against Rwanda.
Speaking in an interview with Brila FM, the former footballer-turned-pastor West noted that the Super Eagles play well under Eguavoen but are often unlucky with the results.
“Anytime Eguavoen leads the team, he brings a certain touch, taking the team back to those glorious days.
“In major tournaments, where you expect them to cross the line, something always happens. What Eguavoen is lacking is only grace.”
“The team will play well, but the results won’t favour them,” the former Inter defender said.
He added that he prefers local coaches leading the Super Eagles to foreign managers.
