He emphasized that, regardless of the social status of those involved, they will be held accountable and face legal consequences.

Speaking at the 2025 Annual Inter-faith Service for State workers on Monday, Governor Makinde rejected the notion that the governments of Anambra State and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had ignored similar stampedes in their regions. He made it clear that this would not deter his government’s commitment to justice. “Irrespective of who is involved, justice must prevail in Oyo State,” Makinde declared, stressing that those responsible would be made to face the law.

The service, attended by labour leaders, political appointees, members of the judiciary, traditional rulers, and community leaders, served as a platform for the governor to reflect on the challenges his administration faced in 2024. He recalled the tragic explosion in January 2024 in Bodija, which affected his office and caused widespread impact in Ibadan, as well as the tragic stampede at Islamic High School, Bashorun, in December 2024 that claimed 35 lives.

Makinde condemned the stampede, expressing his desire to never witness such an event again in the state. “We lost 35 innocent souls; may we not see such again in Oyo State,” he said. Addressing those who pointed out similar incidents in Anambra and FCT, where no one was held accountable, Makinde asserted that Oyo State would be different. “Oyo State is not Anambra State. No matter how highly placed, justice must be done here. If anyone is granted bail pending trial, that is the judiciary’s decision, but the trial will go on,” he added.

In response to public concerns, Makinde reiterated that Oyo State would uphold the rule of law. “Even if the entire country decides not to follow the rule of law, in Oyo State, we will follow; we will dare to be different.”TOP NEWS TODAY!
