Idris confirmed that the President’s approval would ensure the timely establishment of the MIL Institute, which will be located in the Federal Capital Territory. The institute is set to be a significant milestone for Nigeria, as it will be the first of its kind globally to be hosted in the country.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been very supportive of the take-off process, and has approved the release of all funds required for the immediate operationalisation of the Institute,” Idris said. He also expressed gratitude to UNESCO for selecting Nigeria to host this important institution.

The UNESCO MIL Institute aims to address pressing global challenges such as misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech—issues that are becoming increasingly pervasive in the digital age. Jelassi, in his response, highlighted the critical role the institute will play in promoting media literacy and ensuring a safer, more reliable internet environment. He noted that the institute’s goals are in line with UNESCO’s broader priorities, including fostering critical thinking and platform transparency, while safeguarding freedom of expression.

During the meeting, Jelassi also introduced the UNESCO MIL Cities initiative, which seeks to integrate media and information literacy into the daily functioning of cities worldwide.
