North Korean Leader, Kim Il-Sung Returns From Exile

On this day in 1945, North Korean founder and leader Kim Il-sung returned from exile after 26 years of living abroad. His exile was due to Japan’s occupation of Korea, which began in 1910. During these years, Kim became a dedicated anti-Japanese revolutionary, first joining guerrilla groups in Manchuria and later aligning himself with the Soviet Union. By the end of World War II, Japan’s defeat opened the way for his return.
