Tani Olohun, who himself faced similar accusations in the past, stated that Odofin is currently being held at the DSS office in Eleyele, Ibadan. However, attempts to confirm the arrest directly from the DSS have been unsuccessful, as the agency has not yet appointed a new spokesperson following the redeployment of Dr. Peter Afunanya last September.
Dr. Afunanya’s redeployment marked a shift in the DSS’s media strategy, with the agency opting for a more discreet approach to media interactions. This policy, which emphasizes secrecy, has led to a reduction in the DSS’s public visibility and transparency, returning to previous practices that limit communication with the public and media.
The reported arrest of Balogun Odofin comes nearly two years after Tani Olohun himself was arrested by Nigerian police in November 2023. He was charged in Ilorin, Kwara State, for allegedly burning the Qur’an and making derogatory statements about Muslim figures in the region.
Following his arraignment, Tani Olohun expressed regret for his actions, apologizing to the Muslim community, including prominent cleric Alfa Labeeb. He pleaded for forgiveness and assured that he would respect religious symbols in the future. “I didn’t know that burning the Qur’an was an offence,” he explained at the time. “As soon as I was informed, I immediately removed the video of the incident from my social media account within a minute.”
The burning of the Qur’an has sparked outrage across various communities, with traditional and religious leaders condemning the act. Oba Sefiu Olawale Oyebola Adeyeri III, the Aseyin of Iseyinland in Oyo State, issued a statement on Tuesday denouncing the burning of the holy book. He described the act as a grave violation that should never be tolerated, emphasizing that it undermines religious harmony and mutual respect.
“As leaders and representatives of the people, we strongly condemn this heinous act. It is an affront to the teachings of all faiths, which emphasize respect for one another’s beliefs,” said Oba Sefiu. He called for calm and urged Muslims not to allow the incident to destabilize efforts to maintain peace and unity.
The traditional ruler also stressed the need for swift action by the authorities to investigate and hold the perpetrators accountable. He appealed to stakeholders, including religious leaders, government officials, and civil society, to work together in promoting tolerance and understanding.
