His observations sharply contrasted with the government’s claims of progress.
According to Obi, Nigeria has experienced a significant economic decline. He highlighted that the nation, once Africa’s largest economy with a GDP of $574 billion and a per capita income of over $3,500 in 2014, has now fallen to fourth place on the continent.
In response, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) criticized Obi’s remarks. Through a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the party dismissed his claims as misleading and overly pessimistic. Morka also took aim at Obi’s track record, labeling him a “leading doomsayer” and accusing him of portraying himself as infallible when addressing Nigeria’s challenges. The APC spokesperson claimed that Obi’s eight years as governor of Anambra State left no significant achievements or lasting impact, a criticism aimed at undermining his credibility.
Tensions escalated further when Obi, via a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, revealed that Morka accused him of “crossing the line” and warned him of potential consequences. Obi expressed alarm over the threats, noting that his commitment to truth and constructive criticism has seemingly provoked authoritarian tendencies.
“Have I really crossed the line?” Obi questioned in his post. “My New Year message has now led to threats against my life, my family, and those around me. While I have received all sorts of messages, Felix Morka has gone further to accuse me of ‘crossing the line’ and has warned that I will face the consequences.”
Obi reiterated his commitment to maintaining decorum and invited critics to point out any instances where he may have overstepped boundaries. However, he emphasized that he would not be silenced in his pursuit of truth and justice.
“We are increasingly transforming into an authoritarian and repressive regime, where freedom of expression is being systematically suppressed,” Obi warned. He concluded by urging Nigerians to work towards building a freer and more democratic society for future generations.
