Utweets reports that the family described the move as insincere and criticized the handling of other initiatives meant to honour the late governor’s legacy.

In a statement issued on Monday, Babajide Akeredolu, speaking on behalf of the family, acknowledged that the judicial complex was a project dear to Akeredolu, given his passion for justice and his career as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria. However, the family condemned the naming ceremony as premature, emphasizing that genuine honour would only be achieved by completing the project and ensuring its functionality.

“The groundbreaking ceremony for the proposed judicial complex, initiated by Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, is commendable,” the statement read. “However, naming an unfinished project after him is both premature and insincere. True immortality lies in completing and operationalizing the project. If Governor Aiyedatiwa truly wishes to honour Akeredolu’s legacy, he must do so through concrete actions, not symbolic gestures.”NIGERIANS ARE HAPPY WITH TINUBU| JUST A YEAR PLUS IN OFFICE, TINUBU HAS DONE WHAT NO OTHER PRESIDENT HAS NEVER DONE BEFORE IN OFFICE. Governor Aiyedatiwa had earlier described the complex, now named the Oluwarotimi Odunayo Akeredolu Judiciary Complex, as a fitting tribute to the late governor’s desire to strengthen the judiciary. Despite this, tensions have arisen between the state government and Akeredolu’s family over how the late governor’s legacy is being handled.

Rejection of Memorial Lecture

Adding to the controversy, the late governor’s widow, Betty Akeredolu, publicly rejected a memorial lecture organised by the state government in honour of her husband. She described the event as insidious propaganda aimed at undermining her husband’s legacy.

“Which legacy? Lecture, my foot!” Betty Akeredolu said in a statement. “My family and I were not consulted. As the saying goes, you cannot shave a man’s head in his absence. This is insidious propaganda taken too far. Lucky [Aiyedatiwa], you are preoccupied with rubbishing Aketi’s legacy, but you will not succeed.”

The family also highlighted their discontent with the lack of coordination and respect shown by the state government. They revealed that the family’s plans for a remembrance event in Owo had been communicated to the governor, yet they learned about the state-organised memorial lecture via social media just days before it took place. No member of the Akeredolu family was invited.

“This lack of courtesy and respect is unheard of, especially for an event meant to honour a former governor,” the statement read. “Governor Aiyedatiwa was informed of our plans by the head of the Akeredolu family, Prof. Wole Akeredolu, during a praise night in November. He acknowledged this and assured us that the state government would be involved. The decision to proceed without informing or including us raises questions about whether this was deliberate mischief or poor advice from his aides.”

Proposals to Preserve Akeredolu’s Legacy

The family outlined practical ways for the state government to honour Akeredolu’s legacy meaningfully. They urged Governor Aiyedatiwa to:

  1. Upgrade Rufus Giwa Polytechnic to a University – A project for which all preliminary studies and recommendations had been completed during Akeredolu’s administration.
  2. Complete the Akure Flyover – The ongoing flyover project at Onyearugbulem Junction, which was intended to be completed in 18 months, remains unfinished. Completing it would reflect Akeredolu’s commitment to infrastructure development.
  3. Resolve Civil Service Issues – Address salary payment discrepancies, unpaid deductions, and the lack of funding for ministries and parastatals.
  4. Address Abandoned Road Projects – Revive critical infrastructure projects across the state.

The family further criticized any retrogressive policies or divisive actions that undermine Akeredolu’s legacy, calling on the governor to halt punitive measures against individuals associated with the late governor.NIGERIANS ARE HAPPY WITH TINUBU| JUST A YEAR PLUS IN OFFICE, TINUBU HAS DONE WHAT NO OTHER PRESIDENT HAS NEVER DONE BEFORE IN OFFICE. “To the people of Ondo State, we are deeply grateful for your unwavering love and support,” the statement concluded. “We will continue to uphold the legacy of our late patriarch, speak truth to power, and hold leaders accountable.”..Tap To Read The Full Story Here.
