Utweets reports that this warning was issued in a public alert (No. 051/2024), accessible on the agency’s official website.

The issue came to light when a complaint was filed by a doctor at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH-NSIA) concerning a suspicious Phesgo product brought in by a patient for treatment. While the drug had not been administered at the time of reporting, its characteristics aligned with a previously identified counterfeit batch, C3809C51.

Roche, the Marketing Authorization Holder (MAH) for Phesgo, investigated images of the suspected counterfeit drug and compared them to genuine samples. The investigation confirmed the batch’s counterfeit status, revealing:

  • No batch number in the MAH database
  • Discrepancies in labeling and language
  • Incorrect tamper-evidence labels
  • Missing basilisk and incorrect bollino date

Due to the absence of physical samples for chemical analysis, the investigation was restricted to visual assessments.

Phesgo 600mg/600mg Solution for Injection is a critical medication used to treat breast cancer by targeting and killing cancer cells. NAFDAC warned that counterfeit medicines pose significant health risks, including reduced efficacy and potential harm, as they fail to meet regulatory safety and quality standards.

NAFDAC has instructed all its zonal directors and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and remove any counterfeit products from circulation. It also called on stakeholders in the supply chain—including importers, distributors, retailers, and healthcare providers—to remain vigilant and ensure they source medications only from authorized suppliers.

Reporting and Consumer Safety

NAFDAC urged healthcare professionals and the public to report suspicions of counterfeit or substandard medicines to the nearest NAFDAC office. Reports can also be made through the following channels:

The agency emphasized that adverse effects linked to medical products should also be reported promptly to ensure timely action.
