The suspect reportedly created and operated several social media accounts to disseminate false and provocative content targeted at discrediting the Police.

The statement emphasized that Ekhorutomuen’s activities aimed to erode public trust in the Police Force and incite disorder. According to Adejobi, such actions threaten societal stability and undermine the cohesion necessary for national peace and security.

“The Nigeria Police Force has taken decisive action to curb the spread of fake news, disinformation, and incitement capable of widening the trust gap between the Police and members of the public who are critical stakeholders in national peace and security,” the statement read.

Adejobi reminded Nigerians that inciting public distrust against the Police or spreading disinformation is a criminal offense punishable by law.

“This deliberate spread of falsehoods erodes public trust, undermines societal cohesion, and poses significant risks to national security,” he said, urging citizens to exercise responsibility in their use of communication platforms.

The Police reiterated their zero-tolerance policy toward any act that could destabilize the nation or tarnish the reputation of government institutions. Citizens were warned against the misuse of social media for spreading fake news or inciting public unrest, as such actions jeopardize national unity.
