Gists9ja reports the announcement was made by the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, during a visit to the facility on Monday.
A Tour of the Revitalized Facility
Speaking to a team on the facility tour, Kyari expressed optimism about the refinery’s progress. “We are taking you through our plant. This plant is running. It is not 100 percent. We are still in the process. Many people think these things are not real. They think real things are not possible in this country. We want you to see that this is real,” he said.
The tour also included key stakeholders, such as the Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Farouk Ahmed, highlighting the collaborative efforts behind the refinery’s revival.
Presidential Acknowledgment and Future Plans
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended this milestone as part of a broader strategy to restore Nigeria’s refining capacity. In a statement released in November 2024 by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President acknowledged the foundational role played by former President Muhammadu Buhari in initiating the comprehensive rehabilitation of the country’s refineries.
Tinubu also expressed gratitude to the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) for its financing of this critical project and lauded the leadership of Mele Kyari for his commitment to overcoming challenges in achieving this progress.
The President directed NNPC Limited to expedite the reactivation of other refineries, including the second Port Harcourt refinery and the Kaduna refinery, to further boost Nigeria’s domestic refining capacity.
Toward Energy Sufficiency
President Tinubu emphasized the strategic importance of revitalizing Nigeria’s refineries, stating, “These efforts will significantly enhance domestic production capacity alongside contributions from privately-owned refineries, positioning our country as a major energy hub. The gas sector will also enjoy unprecedented attention under this administration.”
The President reaffirmed his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focused on achieving energy sufficiency, enhancing energy security, and boosting Nigeria’s export capacity. He also underscored the importance of integrity, patience, and accountability in rebuilding the nation’s critical infrastructure.
A New Era for Nigeria’s Refining Sector
With the Warri refinery operational, Nigeria is taking a critical step toward reducing its dependence on imported petroleum products. Alongside contributions from private refineries like the Dangote Refinery, this development signals the potential for Nigeria to reclaim its position as a leader in energy production and refining in Africa.NIGERIANS ARE HAPPY WITH TINUBU| JUST A YEAR PLUS IN OFFICE, TINUBU HAS DONE WHAT NO OTHER PRESIDENT HAS NEVER DONE BEFORE IN OFFICE.
