Speaking in the televised address, he said, “I declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to eradicate the despicable pro-North Korean anti-state forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people, and to protect the free constitutional order.”

The declaration has sparked political and public uncertainty, and it is unclear how it will impact South Korea’s governance and democracy.

According to Reuters, local media outlet YTN reported that the opposition Democratic Party, led by Lee Jae-myung, plans to “nullify” the president’s decision.

Meanwhile, Han Dong-hoon, leader of the ruling People Power Party, criticised the martial law as “wrong” and pledged to oppose it.

Since assuming office in 2022, Yoon has faced significant challenges in advancing his agenda, largely due to an opposition-dominated parliament.
