Carter’s death follows the passing of his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, in November 2023. The couple had spent their final years in the modest home they built in 1961, where Carter had managed his father’s peanut business before embarking on a political career.
In February 2023, Carter chose to enter hospice care, opting to forgo additional medical treatments. At the time, his grandson Jason Carter shared, “They are at peace and – as always – their home is full of love.”
Despite his declining health, Carter remained engaged in national affairs, expressing his desire to vote in the 2024 election and showing unwavering interest in public service until his final days.
