Eyewitnesses reported that the crash involved two buses. One of the buses, traveling from the Ikare axis, experienced a tyre burst, causing the driver to lose control and collide head-on with an oncoming bus that was transporting fabrics. The force of the collision resulted in both vehicles bursting into flames, with the victims suffering severe burns, some beyond recognition.
Confirmation and Details of the Incident
The Ondo Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ibitoye Samuel, confirmed that 14 people were involved in the accident. Tragically, 13 of them died on the spot, while one person survived but sustained critical injuries. The survivor was quickly transported to the Federal Medical Centre in Owo for medical attention, while the bodies of the deceased were also taken to the same hospital’s morgue for identification.
Samuel further explained that emergency responders, including officials from the FRSC, the police, and the fire service, arrived at the scene promptly to manage the aftermath of the accident. Their quick intervention helped control the situation, but the damage had already been done, and the loss of lives was devastating.
Safety Reminders and Call for Caution
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Ibitoye Samuel urged all road users to take greater responsibility for road safety. He emphasized the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and the need for drivers to exercise caution, particularly in challenging road conditions.
