The deceased, identified as Emeka Odogwu, was killed when the officer found fireworks, locally called “knockouts,” in Odogwu’s possession after being called to the area.
An eyewitness narrated the incident to the press and stated that the police shot at the deceased when he tried to flee after multiple attempts to arrest him.
The eyewitness explained that the struggle between the police and Odogwu led to one of the officers firing a shot that fatally wounded the young man.
The incident has sparked outrage in the community.
The Delta State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement through its Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Bright Edafe.
Edafe said the officer responsible for the shooting has been identified and detained for questioning. He noted that the incident has been reported to the state’s Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, who is personally overseeing the investigation.
“The Commissioner of Police has assured the family that justice will be served,” Edafe stated, emphasizing that the case is being taken seriously.
The death of the teenager has raised concerns about the conduct of the police in the state, with many calling for a thorough investigation and accountability.
