The Nigerian Army has confirmed the deaths of two soldiers during an encounter with operatives of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), the armed wing of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). The incident occurred at Osina in Ideato North Local Government Area, Imo State, during a distress response by troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade.

IPOB, a separatist group advocating for the restoration of the Republic of Biafra, has consistently accused the Nigerian government of marginalizing the South-East region since the end of the Biafra-Nigeria Civil War in 1970. This latest confrontation underscores the ongoing tensions in the region.

Incident Details

In a statement released on Saturday, the Army revealed that its troops were responding to reports of an attack by IPOB/ESN operatives on Osina community when they engaged the group in a firefight. The Army described the attackers as “terrorists,” stating that its overwhelming firepower led to casualties among the assailants, although no specific number was provided.

“Unfortunately, two of our soldiers were killed in action, and one is currently missing,” the statement read. “The terrorists also carted away weapons, including an AK-47 rifle and a tear gas launcher.”

The bodies of the fallen soldiers were recovered, and a pursuit operation was launched against the retreating attackers.

Follow-Up Engagements

Further clashes occurred as troops pursued the fleeing ESN operatives into neighboring communities. At Nkwachi, the soldiers neutralized one ESN member and recovered an AK-47 rifle with a loaded magazine. The chase extended into Umalouma Forest, where intense gunfire exchanges took place.

According to the Army, the dissidents abandoned more weapons under the pressure of superior firepower. The recovered items included five AK-47 rifles, a Fabrique Nationale rifle, and multiple magazines.

“The troops are relentless in their efforts, continuing to track injured operatives and dismantle their hideouts. We urge all IPOB/ESN elements to surrender or face the full force of the military,” the statement added.

Assurance of Peace and Cooperation

The Army assured residents of Imo State that they remain committed to ensuring a peaceful holiday season, free from fear or intimidation. It also appealed to the public for support through timely intelligence about the activities and locations of criminal elements.

A Region in Turmoil

The unrest in Imo State, however, is rooted in deeper political and social issues. Since the controversial Supreme Court ruling in 2021 that declared Senator Hope Uzodinma governor, replacing Emeka Ihedioha—who was widely seen as the people’s choice—the state has witnessed heightened violence and instability. Critics argue that the decision eroded public trust and exacerbated tensions in a region already grappling with separatist agitations.

Over the years, military operations targeting IPOB and ESN have led to allegations of human rights abuses, including the destruction of communities and marketplaces. Civil society organizations have repeatedly called for dialogue and a more humane approach to addressing the grievances fueling separatist sentiments in the South-East.

Conclusion

As the Nigerian Army intensifies its operations against IPOB/ESN, the situation in Imo State remains precarious.LATEST TRICKS/UPDATES: SEE HOW GUYS ARE USING THE LATEST iPHONE 16 Pro Max TO SCAN LADIES AND GET THEIR N4KED BODY. SEE HOW THEY ARE DOING IT.
