A human rights organization,the Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice(CHRSJ) has accused the Oyo State Police Command under the Watch of Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ayodele Sonubi,of detaining suspects more than a year in the Command custody in contrary to the Section 36 of the altred 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The rights group also stated that the action of Oyo State Police Command was in contrary to Article 7 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights(Ratification and Enforcement) Act.
It alleged CP Sonubi of turning the Command to Court of Law where they determined who to be given freedom and Cell term in the Command custody which made some suspects to be in their custody more than a year amd as well determed the suspects to be living on earth or not.
CHRSJ learnt that Mr. Sonubi has been coordinating this act of illegality in the Command since he became the Deputy Commissioner of Police(DCP) in charge of State Criminal Investigation Department(SCID),Iyaganku,Ibadan in the State Capital before he became the Commissioner of Police of the State over six (6) months ago.
The rights group then called for the setting up of the high power independent Judicial Panel of Enquiry to investigate this mind-boggling allegations levelled against Oyo State Police Command under the watch of Mr.Sonubi,adding that part of the area of the panel of enquiry to be covered should be uninformed visitation to all the Police custodies in the State Police Command, particularly, CP Monitoring Unit Cell and that of State CID,Iyaganku in Ibadan.
The group in a signed press statement by the group’s Assistant General Secretary,Pastor Micheal Agaasi which copies were made available to Journalists on Tuesday, stated that Executive Chairman of CHRSJ,Comrade Adeniyi Alimi Sulaiman who was victim of the illegal arrest and unlawful detention in the Monitoring Unit Cell of the Command at Eleyele,Ibadan,revealed the CP Sonubi’s altrocity.
Further revealing that many innocent Nigerians were languishing inside the custody of the Police at Monitoring Unit Cell of the Police Command for many months without trial,adding that one Shola,a Chief Supritendent of Police(CSP) was the Officer In Charge(O/C) of the Monitoring Unit that is coordinating the Cell for CP Sonubi.
While inquiry further from the some of the innocent victims at Police custody,they said Police did not allow them to have access to their family members again and in particular, their lawyers which make their fate of coming out of Police unlawful detention hanging unbalance.
Comrade Sulaiman,who was alive with the spirit of revolution in the Police custody penultimate Wednsday, subjected to inhuman torture by OC Monitoring Unit at the instance of CP Sonubi inconnivance with the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) Supol Folorunso who was incharge of frivolous allegation leveled against him(Sulaiman).
Sulaiman gathered that Oyo Police Command under the watch of CP Sonubi had frustrated the families of the innocent victims in their custody which made them to abandon their family members in the Police custody at both Cells of the State Criminal Investigation Department(SCID) Iyaganku and
Monitoring Unit of the State Command,Eleyele,Ibadan respectively.
When the Police discovered that Sulaiman has been gotten more information from the suspects in the said Monitoring Unit Cell, Mr. Ayodele Sonubi directed the Legal Unit of the Command to prepare a frivolous charge sheet by moving the human rights activist out of the Police custody by taking him(Sulaiman) and 11 others including Ten Mechanic to Court on frivolous allegation of treason felony to topple the government of Seyi Makinde where ordinary Personal Assistant,Seye Famojuro, was the Police Complainant instead of Mr. Seyi Makinde who was supposed to be the nominal Complainant in this regard.
Police that came to Court with the allegation of treason felony penultimate Thursday, did not come to Court with any tangible evidence than relied on the video clip of a peaceful protest held at the Mechanic Workshop on the Federal Road Setback opposite Gbagi Market,Ibadan,Oyo State Capital.
The group added that the crisis occurred when Seye Famojuro wanted to hide under the Oyo State Government to take over the Federal Government Road Setback for his political foes by using the CP Ayodele Sonubi to clap down on Mechanics who resisted the illegal taken over of their workshop where they earned their means of livelihood.
CHRSJ further alleged CP Ayodele Sonubi of conniaving with Seye Famojuro who was a Police Complainant of the allegation of treason felony to use the instrument of Police for personal gains unjustly,adding that this comfirmed the earlier allegation of human rights group(CHRSJ) that the CP Sonubi was taken directive and as well working for Seye Famojuro, a Chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) in the State.
CHRSJ, therefore,called on the Inspector General of Police(IGP), Dr. Kayode Egbetokun and Chairman, Police Service Commission(PSC) retired Deputy Inspector General of Police(DIG), Hashim Argungu to remove Mr. Ayodele Sonubi as Oyo State Commissioner of Police and his O/C Monitoring Unit,CSP Shola by transfering them to the States like Sokoto,Kebbi,Benue,Borno,Niger,Bauchi and Kaduna where they used to have serious security challenges.
