Fear has gripped residents of the Garaha (Graha) area in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State following a terrifying night-time incursion by suspected Boko Haram insurgents, who reportedly roamed the village freely on motorcycles, searching houses for victims.
According to a villager, recognized as Mr Peter who spoke to TGNews, over 40 militants on motorcycles stormed the community recently attacked by the group.
The insurgents spent the entire night moving from house to house, looking for people to kill, forcing terrified residents – including families with children – to flee their homes and spend the night hiding in nearby bushes.
“We slept in the bush with our children last night because Boko Haram stormed our villages on over 40 motorbikes. They kept roaming, searching houses for who to kill until this morning,” the villager said.
The resident explained that there is no security presence in the area, allowing the militants to operate without hindrance. “There is no security personnel in the areas. Boko Haram operate as they wish. We’re still mourning our brothers but have to run into bushes last night for safety.”
He expressed deep frustration over the lack of protection and communication, noting that the insurgents previously destroyed the only telecommunication mast in the community.
“Before, we could call ourselves to run whenever we see them coming, but since they destroyed the only mast we are managing, there is no network now. They come unexpectedly to attack us.”
The villager urgently called on the government to deploy security personnel to the area and restore network services to enable early warnings and coordination among residents.
This latest incident comes amid a series of deadly Boko Haram attacks in Hong LGA over the Christmas and New Year period. In late December 2025, suspected insurgents struck multiple villages including Mubang, Zah, Kijing, and areas around Garaha, killing at least 23 people in some reports, injuring others, and burning homes and foodstuffs. Earlier Christmas Day attacks in Garaha District and Mayo Ladde reportedly claimed lives of soldiers and civilians.
Hong LGA, bordering the notorious Sambisa Forest in Borno State – a known hideout for Boko Haram and its splinter group ISWAP – has suffered repeated assaults in recent years.
Local leaders, including the Hong LGA Chairman, have repeatedly appealed for sustained military presence, including air support, to curb the threats.
Residents say the absence of troops and reliable communication leaves them vulnerable to surprise attacks, forcing many to abandon homes temporarily for safety in the bushes.
Security experts note that while military operations have degraded the insurgents in some areas, porous borders and ungoverned spaces continue to allow militants to launch raids on vulnerable communities.
As families return cautiously to their homes, the call for urgent government intervention grows louder, with pleas for permanent security posts, restored telecommunications, and reinforced patrols to protect lives in this troubled part of Adamawa State.
