Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has apologised to the DR Congo technical staff following a tense exchange after Nigeria’s 4-3 penalty shootout defeat in the World Cup playoff final at Rabat Stadium on Sunday.

The loss ended Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.
‘Emotions ran high’ during post-match incident

Chelle explained that his reaction was triggered by seeing someone in the DR Congo technical area performing what he described as voodoo.

He stressed that his actions were not meant to disrespect the Congolese staff.

“Football is all about emotions. After the match, I reacted hotly to an altercation with a member of the DRC staff trying to come into my technical area,” Chelle wrote on Instagram.

“I have never wanted to target the Congolese people or their staff, which I respect. Disappointed in our elimination but proud of my players.

“Congratulations Congo, which was the best. Their audience showed great fervor, just like ours. Moving forward together for what’s next.”
Focus shifts to AFCON 2025

Chelle also clarified that any x accounts claiming to be him are fake. It has also been confirmed that defender Benjamin Fredrick only has an official Instagram account, and not on X.

With the World Cup campaign over, the Super Eagles are now turning their attention to preparing for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in December.
